Goldfingers – My Personal Goldsmith

On the 25th of December 2015, the love of my life asked me to marry him!
We were standing on the little wooden deck at our tent, overlooking the Okavango River at Nunda Lodge. We were watching the lightning in the distance, listening to the night sounds and smelling the rain, when Gustav went down on one knee, and proposed.

I am now the proud owner of the most beautiful engagement ring in the world; so very unique, and handmade by Carin Briedenhann from Goldfingers.

I was saving hundreds of images from Pinterest and the internet for months. And around October/November, Gustav and I decided to go see Carin to discuss our options.

I photographed Carin’s wedding earlier in the year, so I knew I wanted to make use of her services. We didn’t know the first thing about rings, metals or diamonds, but Carin explained everything to us in a language we could understand!! I showed her the picture of the ring I wanted, and she told me the pro’s and con’s about this particular design.  We left feeling excited and HAPPY; but that night, I started doubting my ring design and my mom and I returned a couple of days later to talk to Carin again.  She then started drawing some designs, and I fell in love with what I saw on paper!!

My father passed away in 2009, so my mom told me that I can use the diamonds on her wedding ring to incorporate it in mine.  We bought the big diamond (0.71 ct) from a contact that Carin had and we used 2 smaller diamonds (0.25) from my mom’s wedding ring.

Gustav collected the ring a day before we left on our trip to the Caprivi (he proposed the next day). I never saw the ring till the night of the proposal.

She got an apprenticeship at Gold Ideas in WIndhoek, in association with JASSONA (Jewellers association of Namibia) and in 2007 she started her four year apprenticeship. Working every day from eight to five and doing self-study in the evenings.

After she finished her studies, she worked at Horst Knop Jewellers for three years and then for Adrian & Meyer Jewellers for a year and a half. Carin finally started her own business, GOLDFINGERS, in September 2015. She has been blown away by the good response and referrals she received by many clients.

“It is hard work, but it is absolutely worth it. I get to work with my clients one on one, where I never had the opportunity to do that when I worked for another jeweller, and I can build customer relationships, which is very important to me.”

She says she loves making people’s dreams come true, by designing and creating their dream wedding rings, or a piece of jewellery. Or even repairing or sizing a late grandmother’s ring, etc.

“I don’t do castings, I make everything by hand, so every piece will be unique. I can design, manufacture and repair. I work with all the precious metals and I also set all the gemstones myself. This is what I love about being a goldsmith; my job is versatile and every day I can do something different. I also like to challenge myself, by trying out new ideas and techniques to better myself.”

What advice do you have for clients:

“The best advice I can give to a client, especially to couples who want to get engaged, are:

  • Consider your budget, and don’t be afraid to discuss it with your goldsmith. This will give me a better idea of what we can work with. Which precious metal I can work in, and what gemstone and size of gemstones is best suited within your budget. I will always, in any case, give you multiple options, so you can always choose the one best suited for you.
  • It is always good it have an idea of what you want, so bring a few pictures along. This makes it easier for me to get a better idea of your taste, so I can get started on a design. If you have no idea, it is also fine. I have enough experience to help you get a great design.
  • Give the goldsmith enough time to manufacture. It is always better to come too early than too late. I need at least two weeks to get all material sorted before I can start to manufacture your dream design.”

“My goal is to make the client’s experience stress free and as pleasant as possible, and to build a good customer relationship.”

I’ve known Carin for a couple of years now, and I am so very, very pleased and happy and totally in love with my engagement ring. I HIGHLY recommend Carin to EVERYONE and anyone!
